Do you want to study Japanese or Japanese traditional culture? This is a good chance because you are now in Japan. If you can speak Japanese, your life in Japan will be more convenient and easier. However if you can't speak Japanese, you can ask for help from a volunteer interpreter.

(1)Japanese Courses / Japanese Schools

①Non-profit Japanese Courses

These Japanese courses are available to anybody who wants to study Japanese, but some of the courses have certain terms and a limited number of space.

You can get information about other Japanese courses at the Sendai International Center International Exchange and Information Area. Moreover, you can apply to the Sendai International Relations Association for private lessons by volunteer Japanese tutors.

②Private Japanese Language Schools

These Japanese schools have curriculums which satisfy the requirements for a student visa. School fees depend on the schools, and you also have to pay entrance examination and entrance fees in addition to school fees.

(2) Japanese Language Proficiency Test

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is a test for non-native speakers of Japanese. Every year, the application period is from mid-July to mid-September, and the test date is in December. You can buy the application form at book stores in Sendai. Contact below for details.

(3) Volunteer Interpreters

You can ask for a volunteer interpreter to help you with sightseeing or filling out forms. You need to pay for the volunteers' transportation expenses. And some groups also ask for meal expenses and an honorarium. When you request a volunteer please allow sufficient time because different volunteers require different periods of notice.

(4) Japanese Traditional Culture

If you want to study Japanese traditional culture like sado (tea ceremony), shodo (calligraphy), kado (flower arrangement) etc., you can take lessons.

If you want to try budo (Japanese martial arts), you can join clubs, or take part in courses held at public gymnasiums.
