Local Groups Connecting with Citizens

くつ.JPGThe Sendai Malaysian Exchange Student Society

On a Friday night, I heard the sound of lively conversation coming from the other side of the Malaysian Society's door. When I opened the door, what did I see but a crowd of people's shoes. I had come to speak with Syahril and Nazirul from the Malaysian Exchange Student Association about the Sendai Malaysian Exchange Student Society.

A Meeting Every Fridayシャーリルナジル_切抜き(縮小).jpg

A group that was created to help Malaysian exchange students living in Sendai connect and support each other; it began with only two people, but now boasts a membership of over thirty. They meet every Friday night, with members taking turns hosting the event at their homes, and discuss things such as everyday life and studying. In the picture we see Syahril on the right and Nazirul on the left. In Malaysia, seniority based relationships don't exist. "Everyone is friends", they told me. Other than the usual Friday meetings, the members also hang out together, often chatting or commiserating together while watching TV.

Enjoy Spending Time with Japanese People!

Recently, they have been getting involved in activities that give them a chance to meet Japanese people, such as hosting Malaysian cooking classes and visiting nursing homes and daycare facilities. When talking about the future activities of the group, they enthusiastically spoke of their desire to give people of all ages the chance to learn more about Malaysia.

Returning the Favor to Japan

After the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, they had to stay in a designated refuge center for five days. During this time, they encountered many Japanese people who despite their own personal hardships reached out to them and offered help and kindness. To return the favor, from April until June, members volunteered at refuge centers, helping to cook and distribute food. Through such efforts to help those displaced by the earthquake regain their strength, through teaching about their home country, and through deepening the bonds of friendship and community between members through their activities at shelters, the group has been able to put a silver lining on the tragedy of the earthquake.

Moroccan Café Glocal

KinS_1.jpgOn June 26, I participated in the Moroccan Café Glocal event held at the Sendai International Center. At this event, I introduced Morocco, and participants were able to enjoy Moroccan mint tea.

The participants listened carefully to my presentation while drinking mint tea and because Morocco is an unfamiliar country to most Japanese people, I showed them some pictures and traditional clothes. I was joined by another Moroccan exchange student and a Japanese person who had lived in Morocco before. My part was to mainly explain Morocco's history and interesting tourist locations. In the second half of the event, there was free time to interact with the participants and we also received many questions. All of them showed a big interest in Morocco and said that they hoped to visit one day.

I was glad to participate in this event because I received many questions about my country and I got the chance to listen to the experiences of a Japanese person who had lived in Morocco before. By listening to the impressions of other people about Morocco, I discovered a lot of new things about my country.

About the Reporter

My name is Belmoubarik Mohamed and I'm from Morocco which is a well known tourist destination because of its nature including the mountains, sea, and desert. With the presence of Islamic, Berber (Native North Africans), Central Africa, and former Andalusia (nowadays Southern Spain) cultures, Morocco is a very multicultural country. My hometown is Errachidia and it is a quiet city like Sendai which is why I have really enjoyed my stay here. My hobbies are basketball and reading old Arabic literature.
